Your Right Hand Therapy Man

I help new dads, grieving fathers, and postpartum couples find more calm, confidence, and connection.

Fathers are often treated only as observers or support people during pregnancy and postpartum care. I see them as parents whose mental health, roles, and responsibilities have a significant impact on their partner and family.

My work is designed for the dad who is holding a great deal together, but may not have many places or spaces where he can receive care and speak honestly about what the transition to parenthood is doing to him and his partner.

I'M A PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST.

Advanced trainings in paternal perinatal mental health and trauma-informed care for perinatal loss, combined with my clinical interests in the psychology of men & masculinities, guide my work to empower men in early fatherhood through some of the most challenging, emotional, and relational times in their lives.

THE WHY BEHIND THE WORK THAT I DO:

Maybe you are aren't the best help-seeker. Maybe your wife or your wife's therapist referred you to me.

Men, in general, and fathers, specifically, don't often receive the kinds of specialized care that they may actually need.

My clinical work is focused on serving a variety of new dads because I believe that there are too few community resources and supports available which also factor in fathers.

Research shows a clear connection between a father's mental health and its impact on maternal health and infant health.

"WHEN YOUR VALUES ARE CLEAR TO YOU, MAKING DECISIONS BECOMES EASIER."

Verve Psychotherapy provides the type of services that I needed at different times:

  • when my wife and I first journeyed through an infertility marathon,

  • when we were expecting our first child,

  • when we welcomed our first child,

  • when we journeyed through our first year of postpartum with our first child,

  • when we lost a subsequent pregnancy,

  • when we felt so alone in our reproductive grief,

  • when we journeyed through a high-risk pregnancy after loss,

  • when we welcomed our second child in spite of birth trauma,

  • and when we journeyed through our first year of postpartum with our second child.

I founded and launched my practice around the same time when I first became a father. I noticed so much more visible therapeutic support for moms and new motherhood, albeit never enough, as compared to dads and new fatherhood.

Becoming Dad, and everything that comes with it, has been the most transformative set of experiences of my life.

It became so clear to me that I needed to use my brain, my heart, and my professional license, clinical skills, and advanced training to help support men in early fatherhood and postpartum couples.

It's my privilege to come alongside you as a partner to do this deeply personal and sacred work together.

SOME MATT FACTS:

I earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree in 2011 from Eastern Michigan University and a Master of Social Work degree in 2013 from New York University Silver School of Social Work. I'm one of the very few male perinatal mental health specialists in the United States. I'm a big fan of therapy, and I wish everyone I know, love, and care about had their own therapist.
